1978 Arts Center in Maplewood presents “FRESH 7.0,” an annual Advanced Placement Studio Art Student Exhibit. The show opens Sunday and runs through January 4 (weekends only, 2-5 p.m.).

The opening reception is Sunday, December 21 from 2-4pm and is hosted by the Gallery 1978 Columbia High School interns.

Fresh 7.0

The exhibit celebrates the talent and creativity of local, rising young art stars. This year, Advanced Placement Studio Art students from Columbia High School are joined by others from Arts High School, Newark; West Essex Regional High School, North Caldwell; Governor Livingston High School, Berkeley Heights and Elizabeth High School Upper Academy, Elizabeth.

Visitors are welcome to attend the opening reception and speak to the students about their work. AP Studio Art At Columbia is one the longest running advanced placement classes in the state and prepares hundreds of students for success in the visual arts, according to a release from the gallery. All the participating teachers are practicing artists and have exhibited in major venues in New York and New Jersey.

Also as part of the exhibit, Portfolio Review Day will be on January 3, 2015 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Artist Mikel Frank will be offering free reviews and critiques for high school students who want feedback on their work. Whether you are applying to art school or just want experienced, objective and honest feedback about your direction as an artist, this review will be valuable.

Mr. Frank holds a Masters Degree in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He earned his undergraduate B.F.A. degree from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and has exhibited his work widely. He is currently the curator of an exhibition called MICA: Then and Now, which opens at The Noyes Museum of Art on January 18, 2015. Mr. Frank is also the creator and leader of the Contemporary Artists Forum, an adult critique group which meets at Gallery 1978 and has been popular in the community for over 11 years.
