Seton Hall University’s Walsh Gallery presents “The Cure for Anything.” The exhibition celebrates the 165th anniversary of the publishing of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Consisting of historical objects and contemporary art, “The Cure for Anything” will examine humanity’s fascination with the sea in Melville’s time as well as today. Artifacts from Sag Harbor Whaling Museum, the Museum of Early Trades and the University’s archives will be featured in the show alongside artwork by Dahlia Elsayed, Eileen Ferara, Sunil Garg, Matthew Nicolosi, Viviane Rombaldi Seppey, Daniel Spink and Amanda Thackray. Curators Chelsea Levine and Katherine Tedesco invite visitors to examine how mind, body, soul, and ego drew Ishmael and many others to the sea.

Notes Tedesco, “Herman Melville’s Moby Dick is a brilliant work which captures the strong desire to set loose unto the sea and escape reality. The book is still relevant after 165 years, as exemplified by the artists and artifacts in this exhibition, demonstrating how the sea profoundly resonates in both historical and contemporary contexts.” In conjunction with the exhibition, Dr. John Bryant, Professor of English at Hofstra University will give a lecture titled “Opening Moby-Dick: Melville and the Digital Archive” in the Beck Rooms on February 23, 2016 at 7pm. A Pop-up Museum will also take place, inspired by the well-known maxim “The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.” The pop-up museum is a temporary exhibit created by the visitor participants. Visitors are invited to bring an object, memory or souvenir that relates to the notion of the sea as a curative. Objects will be on display for the duration of the one day museum on February 11, 2016 at the University Center Living Room from 10:30am to 5:30pm.
