Most if not all Maplewood households should be experiencing restored water service and pressure as of 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, according to Maplewood Fire Chief Michael Dingelstedt.

Said Dingelstedt, “I just spoke with a NJAW (New Jersey American Water) supervisor and he advised me that the water pressure in town is being slowly restored so most, is not all, people should have water already. The water company is in the process of sampling the water quality. The ‘boil water’ advisory REMAINS IN EFFECT for the next 24 hours.”

Many Maplewood households lost water service or pressure after 10:30 p.m. on Friday night when a water main broke near the Millburn Train Station. Maplewood Fire Department personnel responded to the break, and four water tankers were staged in Springfield in the event of a fire in impacted towns.

Early Saturday morning, New Jersey American Water issued a boil water alert, instructing residents to bring any tap water to a boil for one minute, then cool the water before using it to drink or cook. Residents should also throw away ice cubes made from water lines connected to their refrigerators during the overnight period. Showering and bathing is safe — just don’t drink the water.
