On Thursday and Friday, 6,800 students in the South Orange – Maplewood School District will leave summer behind and head back to the classrooms of the district’s nine schools.

K-7 and 9th grade students begin Thursday, Sept. 3; 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders start Friday, Sept. 4.

There are a lot of changes in the district this year, including many new administrators and teachers, a brand-new Superintendent, changes to the curriculum, a new preschool and more.

Several schools (including SOMS and CHS) have new websites, and the district’s main website continues to be revamped and updated.

Parents: remember to check PowerSchool to keep abreast of your child’s grades, schedules and more.

As part of the district’s stated goal toward improving communication, parents and caregivers of all elementary and middle school students have received email letters welcoming them and their children back, and overviewing the curriculum.

“The Welcome to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade letters are a brand new initiative to provide an overview for middle school families, similar to the elementary welcome letters which we created a few years ago,” said a district spokeswoman.

(As an example, the Welcome Letter sent to 7th grade families is attached here as a PDF.)

Links to all the letters and Curriculum Overviews for all grades can be found on the district website.

Here’s to a great school year!
