The dry weather is causing leaves to fall sooner than usual this autumn, and locals are starting to wonder about leaf collection and removal.
Leaf collection will begin the week of October 12 in Maplewood (see schedule below) and on October 26 in South Orange.
Essex County will perform leaf collection on county roads in Maplewood and South Orange from Monday, November 2 to Friday, November 6; Monday, November 30 to Friday, December 4; and Monday, December 28 to Thursday, December 31. Find a list of County Roads here (note that Springfield Avenue is under municipal control and Maplewood will perform leaf collection there).
South Orange urges residents who live on county roads to call 973-239-3366 for leaf removal information. Essex County asks that residents who have questions about the leaf collection schedule call the Essex County Department of Public Works at 973-226-8500, Ext. 0.
Essex County also provides the following guidelines for county roads: “Leaves should be swept to the curb or placed in biodegradable bags at the curb no more than seven days before the scheduled pickup time. In addition, residents are asked to pile leaves at least 10 feet from a storm drain.”
At last night’s South Orange Board of Trustees meeting, Trustee Walter Clarke noted regarding municipal leaf collection, “It bears repeating that [leaf removal] will not begin until Oct. 26 then runs through Dec. 7. Some leaves are dropping early due to the dry spell, but please hold onto them, bag them, compost them, bring them down to DPW [the Department of Public Works] but do not put them in the street until Oct. 26.”
Once October 26 rolls around, leaf pickup cycles “are estimated at 11 days,” according to an update read by South Orange Village President Sheena Collum at last night’s Board of Trustees meeting. “Any leaves left at curbside after December 7 will be a violation of municipal ordinances.”

Maplewood 2015 Leaf Collection
Beginning the week of October 12th leaf piles will be collected in all sections until regular sectional collections begin on October 19th.
Please note that weather and equipment failures may cause a delay in the collection schedule. Delays should not be more than 1 or 2 days. If township gets ahead of schedule they may come through your section early, but will also be back during your scheduled week.
No leaves shall be put in the street more than 7 days prior to your scheduled week. No leaves shall be put in the street after the Sunday of your last collection week. No plastic bags or branches may be mixed with the leaves. Leaves will not be collected if there is evidence of plastic bags, branches, or other waste items.
