PSE&G continues to repair a gas leak that runs through Meadowbrook Park and the area around the Duck Pond, and the utility expects the job to be completed soon.

“Our crews will be working in the area until the end of the month,” said spokeswoman Lindsey Puliti, who said the leak posed no danger to residents. “[We] will be monitoring the area as final repairs are completed.”

The leak was the subject of some concern by residents who in early January reported noticing a strong odor of gas in the area of Flood’s Hill and Meadowbrook Park. PSE&G crews began repairing the leak — which is actually multiple, small leaks along one long pipeline that runs from Flood’s Hill to South Orange Avenue.

Township officials confirmed the problem has existed for many years, and that PSEG has frequently repaired various gas leaks around town.

Last week, a PSE&G employee seen working near the Duck Pond said his crew was repairing each gas line connection, every 18 feet, throughout the entire park. The employee called the leak “minor” and was the result of normal aging of the pipes and infrastructure, which Puliti confirmed. The crew is encapsulating every connection, or covering it in a rubber coating, which should fix the problem for many years to come.

Village Green will continue to update this story.
