Maplewood to Issue Proclamation Recognizing 11/20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance

The following is from Maplewood Township Committee member Dean Dafis. The Maplewood TC meets tonight, Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m. at Maplewood Town Hall:

Today, November 20, is national Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) during which we honor members of the trans community who we lost to hate and violence the past year.  TDOR also coincides with national Transgender Awareness Week, an opportunity to raise awareness to transphobia and violence – especially against trans persons of color, those with disabilities, and non binary transgender persons who collectively make up the vast majority of victims to LGBT hate crimes in the US currently, and to foster trans community pride, celebration, affirmation, and advocacy.

In Maplewood, we strongly believe in upholding, protecting, and celebrating the human rights of all citizens within and outside of our borders.  We especially recognize and appreciate our large LGBTQ community.  We want to honor those we lost, those who are living, our brothers and sisters, our neighbors together as one thriving and loving community.

Accordingly, we have raised the trans flag for the week.  And at tonight’s TC public meeting, we will be issuing a Proclamation recognizing TDOR and TAW, which includes the names of the trans lives we lost in the past year to violence and hate.
