The National Weather Service is advising of a major storm impacting New Jersey this afternoon into tomorrow morning. Heavy rainfall of 1″-2″ is anticipated for the area, with the potential for wind gusts up to 50 mph.

Strong winds and heavy rain have the potential to down trees and power lines; power outages are possible. Unsecured objects and scattered tree limbs may be moved by gusts of wind. Residents and business owners are advised to secure outdoor objects. Travel should be avoided whenever possible, and caution should be used when on the roads. Avoid driving through low-lying areas and don’t drive through standing bodies of water.

In the event of downed power lines or trees, residents should contact both PSE&G and the South Orange Police Department non-emergency line.

If there are power outages, the Village asks all residents and neighborhood associations and groups to do their best to check on any residents that may be elderly or have special needs.

The fire department will not be pumping water out of basements.

Flood Watch and Wind Advisory – Tuesday PM to Wednesday PM

Flood Watch / Wind Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for our area from the evening of Tuesday, January 9th, through afternoon of Wednesday, January 10th. Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches with localized higher amounts are possible during this time. Excessive runoff may result in the flooding of streams, creeks and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for our area from the evening of Tuesday, January 9th, through early morning of Wednesday, January 10th. Winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

In preparation, the Maplewood Department of Public Works will perform several cleaning tasks such as clearing storm drains and catch basins, and the jetting of town sewage areas. During the flood watch, DPW will closely monitoring the flood zones and problematic sewer areas.

Residents living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop and are advised to exercise caution, especially if the rain persists.

Maplewood will be operating community heating centers to assist residents as needed. Any resident needing heating center access should contact the police non-emergency line at (973) 762-1234. Residents will be invited to the Municipal Court/Police Headquarters and housed in the courtroom until a formal heating center is opened and staffed. Once the heating center is open, residents will travel or be transported to the center.
