Letter to the Editor: A Plea to ‘Leave No Trace’ of Post-Sledding Fun

“Remnants of Joy”

The other day, I walked by the garbage dump that was Floods Hill. Strewn pieces of colored plastic, once part of those magic sleds. Cardboard and garbage bags for some who improvised. Hats and scarves and gloves of every pattern and size, often lying single, waiting to be matched again.

Water bottles, juice boxes, candy wrappers, and even a banana peel left behind for someone else to pickup. Yet, who will that be?

When did parents stop caring … and what does that teach? Wouldn’t it have been wonderful if parents and children had returned together to restore our Hill to its natural beauty?

Instead, thank you to the South Orange Department of Public Works for their work in the last few days. I am embarrassed and ashamed of us — these men and women cleaned up our mess.

Next time, please do the right thing and Leave No Trace.
