Construction is moving along on the South Orange Rescue Squad’s new building on Sloan Street in downtown South Orange.
The project has taken longer than expected, said Capt. Dan Cohen in a recent post on Maplewood Online, in large part because the sewer lines under the street had to be repaired.
In his post, Cohen also addressed some complaints that the pink brick building is not esthetically pleasing. Acknowledging it would be impossible to build something everyone would like, Cohen said the squad was happy with the results.
“…I am actually very impressed with how they were able to somehow work within our extremely tight budget and within the extreme lack of available space and still be able to provide all that is needed to keep us functioning,” he wrote on MOL. There were other designs that would have cost a hundreds of thousands more.
As the SORS is an independent 501c3 volunteer organization, construction is all being financed through private funds and donations, said Cohen. Read about the history of the SORS, its displacement and fundraising to build a new headquarters, and its contributions to the community.
