A woman was struck by a train and killed Monday evening near the South Orange Station, according to an NJ Transit spokeswoman.
The incident took place at 4:49 p.m. on the Morris & Essex Line, as the 3:41 train (#430) departing from Gladstone and scheduled to arrive in Hoboken at 5:13 fatally struck the woman who was trespassing on the tracks near South Orange, the spokeswoman told Village Green shortly after 7 p.m.
No injuries were reported to the 100 passengers and crew members aboard the train. The woman’s age was not being released, said the spokeswoman.
Service was briefly suspended and then restored; NJT is reporting delays of up to 60 minutes.
Shortly after 6 p.m., police and EMTs were seen exiting the eastbound platform at South Orange, leading a sobbing man and a woman to an ambulance parked in front of the station.
Just over one year ago, a former Seton Hall University graduate student and adjunct professor was fatally struck and killed at the South Orange train station.
The investigation is continuing; Village Green will update this story as more information becomes available.
