SOMAS AdultSchool Fall2016 Cover_croppedThe South Orange-Maplewood Adult School’s fall catalog is out and includes over 170 courses. In addition to the regular offerings, some highlights include classes on foraging, mahjong, flower design, flamenco and social line dancing, and a brand new section devoted to college planning that features new Lentz & Lentz SAT and ACT classes, a college-planning guide for parents and a college essay-writing workshop for students.

There are two exciting and very topical lectures planned that neatly bookend the presidential election: Salon.com’s award-winning investigative journalist Robert Hennelly will offer some pre-election insight on Monday, Oct. 24, 7:30pm at Columbia High School and Ralph Buultjens, leading analyst of world affairs and NYU professor, will parse the election’s aftermath with a lecture titled America and the World … A Post-Election Agenda on Monday, Nov. 14, 7:15pm, also at Columbia High School.

The Adult School has also planned two fun day trips in November:

On Friday, November 4, enjoy the gorgeous fall foliage as you travel to the lower Hudson Valley to explore Kykuit, the remarkable John D. Rockefeller estate, including the six-story stone house, gardens, incredible Hudson River views and incredible collection of 20th Century art and sculpture. After an elegant three-course lunch at a local restaurant,  head to the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, which features stained glass windows by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall.

On Friday, November 18, tour the Delaware Art Museum’s dazzling collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, the largest collection outside of the United Kingdom. After a light lunch in the Museum’s East Court, you will explore the museum’s galleries and Sculpture Garden before heading over to the elegant Hotel du Pont for a traditional afternoon tea.
