The weather held off on Saturday, October 1, as hundreds of locals gathered on Sloan Street to celebrate the centennial of the South Orange Train Station, completed in 1916 in an effort to elevate train tracks and stations above street level.

In the century since then, the train station has grown to be a major commuter hub: With 4,000 weekday commuters, it is the busiest station on NJ Transit’s Morris & Essex Line.

Led by Village President Sheena Collum, Assemblywoman Mila Jasey and various Village Trustees, locals celebrated with roaring 1920s-style outfits, music, speeches, a quick history lesson, dancing and a signature cocktail. Proceeds benefit the new Fund for South Orange Station (donate here).

Photos are from Village President Sheena Collum’s Facebook feed, provided by numerous photographers including Gregory Burrus, Jacqui Hunter, Jennifer Greenberg and others.
