Updated March 17, 2020: The governors of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut have made the unprecedented decision to order all restaurants, bars, movie theaters, gyms and casinos in their states to close as of 8 p.m. Monday and stay closed until further notice, in an attempt to halt the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. NJ governor Phil Murphy made the announcement after the three leaders had a conference call on Monday morning, according to NJ.com. Supermarkets and pharmacies will be allowed to remain open, and restaurants and bars will be permitted to offer takeout and delivery, the report said.
Updated March 15, 2020: As South Orange-Maplewood residents work more and more from home, the kids are home from school, and everyone needs to be fed, we present a list of how local businesses are responding to the coronavirus threat. Note: Many restaurants, coffee shops and eateries are moving to take out or delivery only. Call ahead. From Maplewood Mayor Frank McGehee: “Social distancing means NO visitors, playdates, or hangouts and remaining out of public spaces (restaurants, gyms, shopping centers) where close contact with others may occur and avoiding public transportation. Maintain 6 feet from others to avoid potential respiratory droplet spread to others at all times.”
Many local businesses are staying open, at least for now, and taking all necessary precautions to keep staff and customers safe and healthy.

The Able Baker will be closing at noon on Tuesday, March 17, and will remain closed through Sunday, March 29, according to owner Julie Pauly. “Our plans are to reopen on Monday the 30th.”
Artistry Salon by Ampy in South Orange, NJ, and owner Ampy Moreno, announce that they are closing temporarily: “We have made a very hard but wise decision at this time to close immediately. Our Artistry Team, Clients, Families, and Communities health is our main concern. We are hoping to open on Tuesday 3/31 but will reassess at that time. We hope everyone stays healthy! As soon as this is all over we will be Here to cover those ROOTS and bring your HAIR back to LIFE. See you all soon!”
Anthony Garubo is closed. In an email they state, “[w]e feel a strong sense of responsibility to this community who we have loved and cared for, for over 46 years to temporarily close our doors. To remain open is to put you and our staff family at risk. A risk that we are not comfortable taking….We plan and hope to reopen in 2 weeks on Thursday April 2nd (fingers crossed).”
Express Yourself Studios‘ Workshops are cancelled now through March 31. “For families with kids home, to keep the creative juices flowing in between remote/online learning. Express Yourself Studios will post online some simple projects that you can do at home even if you have nothing more than crayons, a simple watercolor palette and computer paper. They are also doing next-day local deliveries ($25 minimum) to Maplewood and South Orange. Any order placed online before 2pm, will be delivered the next day porch side. In addition, they have two local pick up times. Wednesday 2pm-3pm and Saturday 11am-12pm. They are also doing continued online sales for those out of state. Palmer’s is closed temporarily as of Tuesday, March 17 according to a Facebook post: “This was a tough decision, but we know it’s for the best, and will hopefully play a small part in helping to #FlattenTheCurve within our community. We’ll take it day by day, and will update you as things change. Before we close our doors, we’d like to ask for your help. If you know any folks in need, tomorrow, we’ll be giving away all that we can from our store between 10am – 12pm. Pastries, quiche, dessert, drinks, dairy, etc. We take comfort in knowing that we can fill some bellies before we close our doors.”
Perch Home: “We have made the difficult decision to temporarily close the store down and move to online/delivery only. It is with the safety and security of our beloved community in mind to make this painful decision. The South Mountain YMCA announced March 13th, it will be closed for the next two weeks, and will assess on an ongoing basis.
The folks at Sew Leana are shutting down operations from March 16-28th states an email. Arturo’s Osteria &Pizzeria: “We think the best way for us to be available to you, while still trying to do the right thing for each other, is to only offer takeout and temporarily close our dining room. We’ll be open all day, no closing between lunch and dinner, and we’ll gladly accommodate a takeout order over the phone, as normal. It may be a bumpy ride for the first couple of days as we gather our bearings so apologies in advance if your order is a little late.”
@thebreadstand will make the switch over on Monday, March 16 (to take out only). “There, we’ll bake extra bread and croissants all week.”
Ashley’s Marketplace & Cafe is open. As of Friday morning (3/13), a store representative said the store was out of paper towels, toilet paper, tissues and all cleaning products. However, they are well stocked with both fresh food and pantry items. The store is not currently doing delivery; however, that might change depending on resources.
BCB Bank is open and ready to help people impacted by coronavirus. In an email, they said, “At BCB Bank, we remain committed to our customers and the local communities. Jackie & Son is doing take out only and closing its dining room to prevent the spread of coronavirus. All payment is cashless, too, so you don’t need to touch money.
The JCC MetroWest is suspending its youth programs, Kid Care, and Special Needs Services for two weeks starting March 16. However, the Fitness Center will remain open in a reduced capacity.
Kimaya Kama in Maplewood Village is open. They tell Village Green, “[w]e are disinfecting our counter tops, all door knobs as well as our POS system at checkout throughout the day. We have set-up an area on our counter with antibacterial wipes, antibacterial gel and cough lozenges. Our clothes will be steamed after people try them on. People can call in to order gift cards or purchase items that they have seen on Facebook or Instagram which we can deliver locally. We also have new range of all-natural antibacterial products (hand sanitizers, etc.) being introduced at Kimaya Kama next week.
Liv Breads — “We know not everyone is feeling comfortable entering public spaces, and we are now accepting orders for curbside pickup and will bring your items to your car. Give us a ring at 973.218.6922 and place your order. We are temporarily CASHLESS.”
Lorena’s dining room is closed, but you can still eat their delicious food. Lorena’s owners say in an email, “[w]e will be offering a travel friendly “TAKE OUT MENU” which will be available from 11:30am to 7:00pm Tuesday through Sunday. We will start accepting orders via telephone Tuesday, March 17th so please have your credit card ready as all orders will need to be paid for when order is placed.”

Mona Lisa Framing is currently open, Tuesday–Saturday 11am to 4pm. In an email they say, “[w]e will continue to operate unless it becomes necessary to temporarily suspend business. We will hold your completed projects here until you feel comfortable picking them up. We are also happy to bring your wrapped project to your car.”
N&K Prime Market told Village Green they are delivering. “N&K Prime is offering free delivery to Maplewood and surrounding areas given the current state, and happy to include freezer wrap upon request. We are hoping to make things a little bit easier on the community during this time of uncertainty.”
Orange Lawn Tennis Club facilities remain open. The restaurant, indoor tennis facility, locker rooms and paddle facilities are available to enjoy. Additionally, maintenance staff is working hard to prepare the outdoor courts, as weather permits. Staff have detailed cleaning protocols and have installed new “automatic” hand sanitizers have been installed throughout our club, including the restaurant, locker rooms, paddle hut and tennis courts. Hand sanitizers are located on each indoor tennis court.
Pet Wants SOMA is offering free delivery services, curbside pickup and shipping for community members who have left the area. Additionally, Additionally, co-owners Jack Denelsbeck and Jonathan Javins “are working hard to make sure that the store is extra clean and sanitized for those who choose to come to the store rather than order online. The urban feed store is open Mondays – Fridays 10am –
7pm, Saturdays 9am – 6pm and Sundays 11am – 5pm.”

Julie Perlow-Greene of Retail Therapy says, “Retail Therapy is open its regular hours with no changes. So that would be Monday-Friday 12-5 and Saturday 10-6. I always post if I have to close and I do that on my FB page and Insta for Retail Therapy Maplewood.”
Ridgewood Row in Maplewood — West Village Clothing (410 Ridgewood Row) will be shutting down this week (3/16). “We will reassess the situation next week. West Village plans to post items for sale online and, as always, offer gift certificates. Local delivery will be available.” Cedar Ridge Cafe is staying open. Milk Money is open March 14 and then closing until further notice. Stage One Hair Salon is closed next week; they will reassess after that. Framing Mill is open regular hours.
Sonny’s Bagels in South Orange on March 19: “We are adjusting our hours and will now be open from 6 am to 2pm each day. We continue to update our website to reflect new offerings/packages. Valley Veterinary Hospital is open and “closely monitoring the status of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and making the necessary adjustments to our daily work and operations.
