Township of Maplewood Seeks a Certified Tax Assessor

The Township of Maplewood — a 3.8 square mile municipality of 24,000 residents located in Essex County with approximately 7,400 line items and a 2019 net taxable value of $3,867,886,657 — is seeking a Full-Time Certified Tax Assessor. The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000. 

The Full-Time Certified Tax Assessor will perform all the statutory duties relating to the assessment of property for the purpose of general taxation and value all real and personal property in the Township. Specific responsibilities include preparing the tax list and duplicates as required by law; maintaining adequate assessment records of each and every parcel of real property assessed and exempted; having custody and maintaining an up-to-date Township Tax Map and providing for the recording thereon of all changes; inspecting new construction and major improvements to existing structures in order to determine values when necessary; explaining assessed values to property owners and defending the Township in tax appeals.

In addition to possessing a current CMTA Certificate and a valid New Jersey driver’s license, candidates should have a minimum of two years experience as a Tax Assessor or Deputy Tax Assessor. State Appraisal License (SCRREA, SCGRE) preferred. Knowledge and experience using Micro Systems CAMA and Mod-IV software. Experience with document management, imaging, digital imaging, and GIS. Experience in challenging SR1A’s and SR6 applications.  Use of Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
