Following the success of a recent Thursday night event led by Laura Booker discussing the challenges of raising boys, Wellspring Health Collective on Valley Street in Maplewood is providing a six-week series on health and wellness topics that are often ignored.

This series, which begins on May 21, is presented free of charge by sponsors Mark Slade and Lisa Danbrot of Keller Williams Mid-Town Direct Realty in Maplewood.

“Since starting Wellspring over three years ago, Lynda [Rountree] and I have discussed adding an education component to our menu of services. We were overwhelmed at the support for our first Community Thursday talk not only from members of the community, but from practitioners and experts within our community who wanted to participate,” said Wellspring co-owner Sue Rexford.

The series launches on May 21 with Breast Fest! led by Cheryl Chapman, a massage therapist specializing in patients with cancer and mastectomy. Events will follow each Thursday evening until June 25, when the series will end with Millburn resident Judy Zinnato discussing her very personal experience raising a transgender child.

Other events in the series include:

  • May 28: Surviving Cancer: Why Complementary Medicine Needs to be Part of Your Healing Process with Susan L. Miller
  • June 4: Attending (the) Dying: What You Need to Know But Are Afraid to Ask with Dr. Lillian Pliner
  • June 11: Three Simple Steps to Improve your Metabolism with Laura Rokosz
  • June 18: The M Word: a talk about Menopause with Kim Collins, aka DoulaMomma

“We are thrilled to have the participation of the area’s experts in complementary healing practices, breast health, menopause, palliative care and more,” said Rountree. “Through the support of Mark Slade and Lisa Danbrot, we are able to bring this valuable information to our very own community, and help our neighbors in their own path to better health and wellness.”

Each event begins at 7 p.m. and will be held at the Wellspring Health Collective, 697 Valley Street in Maplewood. Reservations are not needed, but seating is limited. Each talk will include time for discussion.

Founded in 2012 by Rexford and Rountree, Wellspring brings the local practitioners in health and wellness under one roof, offering discussion and support groups on divorce, personal organization and yoga and more; plus massage and bodywork, including reiki, Swedish massage, shiatsu, reflexology, pre and postnatal, breast treatments, deep tissue, sports and neuromuscular massage and so much more. Also included at Wellspring are professionals specializing in chiropractic, psychotherapy, movement, aromatherapy, nutrition, and meditation workshops.
