Maplewood police arrested a Maplewood resident and charged him with robbery and aggravated assaults on police officers in connection with the knifepoint robbery of a teenager Friday night.
At around 7:16 p.m., police received a report of a man armed with a knife in the area of 144 Jacoby Street, according to a release from Capt. Dawn Williams. A 17-year-old Maplewood resident told police he initially lent the man his cellphone but the man put the phone in his pocket, pulled a kitchen knife and allegedly attempted to stab the teen in the torso, Williams said. The teen was able to block the attack and the man fled on Boyden Avenue toward Irvington.
After seeing someone fitting the description on Mill Road, Officers Ilir Gjatollari and Brian Rodrigues attempted to stop the man, who allegedly tried to run away. After additional officers responded, police were able to arrest 23-year-old Ondre Weekes. They charged him with three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer for resisting arrest, robbery and charges involving a CDS (controlled dangerous substance.)
