The South Orange-Maplewood School District educates more than 6,600 children in the towns from kindergarten through 12th grade. However, some local parents do choose other options for their children’s education. Village Green is profiling those options.

Previously, we have featured Montclair-Kimberley Academy in Montclair, Far Brook School in Short Hills, the Pingry School in Short Hills and Basking Ridge, Newark Academy in Livingston, St. Rose of Lima Academy in Short Hills, and Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange, and Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange.

Today, the focus is on Golda Och Academy in West Orange.

Village Green will also be profiling individual schools in the South Orange-Maplewood School District.

Golda Och Academy (GOA) is a college preparatory, private school for students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. The school’s two campuses are located about two miles apart and serve a combined 535 students.

Golda Och Academy is named for the late Maplewood resident and Congregation Beth El congregant Golda Och, who died in 2010. Previously, the school was named for Solomon Schechter.

GOA is one of more than 70 Solomon Schechter Day Schools in the United States and Canada. GOA was founded in 1965.

GOA follows a curriculum based on the Solomon Schechter Day School movement, in which traditional classroom instruction is integrated with Jewish identity and knowledge. The school runs according to the Jewish calendar, and community service and tikkun olam (repairing the world) takes place at each grade level at Golda Och Academy. In addition, high school students visit Israel twice.

Financial aid is available. Golda Och Academy awards approximately $2.5 million each year in tuition reduction. To qualify for tuition reduction, families must meet the eligibility criteria and must complete the application process.
