The rise is part of an overall positive statewide trend, according to the report, since a new method of counting was instituted five years ago. Nearly 90 percent of NJ high school students graduated in 2015.

The new method counts students enrolled as freshmen four years earlier who got their diplomas last summer. New Jersey already had one of the highest graduation rates in the nation, said the report.

In addition, for the first time African-American students, Hispanic students and those from low-income families all surpassed 80 percent graduation rates. However, the report noted there are still “wide disparities between individual schools” largely breaking down among socio-economic lines.
