Update: At its September 21, 2015 meeting, the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education voted 8-0 (with Johanna Wright abstaining) to approve an addendum to Superintendent Ramos’ contract to provide health care. No members of the public commented during the hearing.

The South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education will vote on an addendum to the contract for Superintendent John Ramos, Sr., which would provide district-paid health care for the district’s new leader.

The vote will take place at the board’s monthly meeting on Monday.

Health insurance was not included in Ramos’ original contract, which the board approved last spring. Ramos is earning $177,500 and is eligible for annual merit bonuses of up to 14.99% of his base salary if he meets specific goals.

His predecessor, Brian Osborne, made an annual salary of $220,000 and also received paid health care.

Ramos’ original contract is attached as a PDF.

The addendum states the action is due to “a change in the Superintendent’s personal circumstances.” A district spokeswoman told The Village Green that since the amendment is a personal and personnel matter, she was unable to provide additional details.

“The cost [of the health care benefit] is dependent on many factors, but essentially Dr. Ramos will be entitled to the same benefits as all other SOMSD employees,” said the spokeswoman.
