“All those communities that were devastated by Tropical Storm Ida and by all the subsequent storms, they all relied on that obligation to do work,” said Township Committeeperson Vic DeLuca. “People spent money and they need to be reimbursed.”

The vandalism and protests were related to programming that featured an elite rescue unit of the Israel Defense Forces. The incident is being investigated as a bias crime.

“You can still unleash through your love, a force greater than yourself, a force to rock the foundations of the world,” said Dr. Saladin Ambar at the annual MLK Day observance hosted by the Coalition on Race. “That’s what happens when we unleash the power of unbridled love. Stand tall. Your country needs you. “

The demolition comes after the Township Committee passed an ordinance last June changing the process by which demolition permits are reviewed and approved, in an effort to limit tear-downs of residential properties that might have historical value.

Despite her retirement from the Coalition on Race, Rowe signaled that her work — and that of the community — was not finished: “We’re gonna lean in and we’re going to make this community and this nation all that it should be.”

The mayor provided extensive updates on everything from the new stormwater utility tax to the potential redevelopment of the Maplewood movie theater at the Township Committee’s annual reorganization meeting.

The MDC and U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill distanced themselves from conditions that were apparently placed on a Maplewood mayoral candidate.

TC member Deb Engel, who seconded Adams’ nomination, said she had been courted for the Mayorship but lost votes when she failed to endorse Mikie Sherrill for NJ Governor.
