Pedestrian Safety

“I live at this intersection and my kids cross this intersection several times a day,” wrote one resident about the intersection of Prospect and Elmwood/Oakland. “This is an amazing improvement to their safety!”

Police announced that a 46-year-old Maplewood resident had been charged in the incident which happened on Sunday evening, March 2.

Meanwhile, Irvington Avenue and several nearby streets will soon see some traffic calming measures like blinking pedestrian crossing signs and solar-powered speed displays.

The student was apparently not seriously injured, but school district officials are “exploring ways to increase pedestrian safety awareness around our schools.”

The change is coming on or about December 18. The move is part of efforts to improve pedestrian safety throughout the town.

A South Orange resident says there have been 10-12 accidents in the intersection of 2nd & Academy streets in the last 14 months because stop signs are difficult to see at night.

Due to delays in the delivery of traffic signal equipment, upgrades to 11 intersections in Maplewood and South Orange may not be completed until 2026.

Committee members agreed to the measure as the township continues to study traffic & pedestrian safety on Prospect.

The father of one of the students hit by a car on October 7 asked for immediate action to make Prospect Street crossings safer.
