The holidays are not yet over, yet, sadly, discarded Christmas trees have begun to litter the curbs of Maplewood and South Orange. Here’s the latest on curbside Christmas tree pickup:

From the South Orange Department of Public Works:

The South Orange Department of Public Works will begin to collect Christmas trees from residents beginning the week of  January 5 and ending the last week of January. All of the trees collected will be recycled and processed into mulch for sale to residents’ landscapers. Also, the material will be used in our parks and playground areas. No wreaths will be collected due to the fact that they are wrapped with steel wire and cannot be ground for mulch. We also recommend that the trees to be collected should not be wrapped with plastic, please remove all plastic before it is put out at the curb.

From the Maplewood Department of Public Works:

Starting January 5, 2015, the Maplewood Department of Public Works will be going around picking up Christmas trees placed at the curb. There is no set schedule. We will go section by section and then start the process over again. The last date for your tree to be placed at the curb is January 30, 2015.

Please do not leave any decorations, nails, or screws on the trees as this type of material will damage our equipment. Christmas wreathes with metal wiring can go into your household garbage as this will also damage our equipment.
