To the Editor:
I urge you to join me in voting for education advocates Maureen Jones and Elizabeth Baker for the South Orange – Maplewood School Board.
Maureen Jones has been advocating for an excellent education since she was seven years old and came to this country unable to speak English but knowing she wanted an excellent education. For the last 20 years she has been advocating for the needs of children with disabilities as a speech language pathologist. And Maureen is no stranger to local advocacy, having become active in the Clinton community as soon as she arrived in town four years ago. Her tenures as Clinton’s PTA English Language Learner (ELL) liaison, PTA Vice President and PTA President, and her complete familiarity with how our elementary schools are run, will allow her to hit the ground running as a board member.
Elizabeth Baker has also been an active volunteer in our community. She is currently serving a second term on the Tuscan PTA Board, and previously served as co-chair of the Tuscan S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Committee. She also served on the Schools Subcommittee of Maplewood’s Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee where she was tasked with reviewing our district’s budget. Elizabeth’s professional career is also devoted to public service.
For the last 18 years, she has used her law degree to advocate on behalf of low-wage workers in numerous employment contexts, including healthcare benefits.
Baker and Jones are what this school district needs to ensure that we deliver the very best education to our children.
