April 29, 4:40 p.m.: This article has been updated with further clarification from Tom Carlson regarding when the Maplewood Planning Board will have final site plans for the project to review.

The Maplewood Village Alliance (MVA) Board of Directors will meet on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Maplewood Town Hall (574 Valley Street, Maplewood, in the committee room).

The meeting is open to the public. (The date and agenda are a change from the original.)

The agenda includes a recommendation from the MVA Design Review Committee regarding the proposed building design for the Post Office Redevelopment site (the “Post House”) and a presentation of the proposed design by JMF Properties, LLC.

The Maplewood Township Committee voted unanimously on April 7 to designate JMF Properties as the official developer for the Post Office site, and voted 3-2 to grant JMF a 5-year tax abatement.

The Maplewood Planning Board is expected to review the site plan and design on May 13. will review the site plan when the developer has a complete, final plan, said chair Tom Carlson in an email. “[JMF has] submitted a preliminary version of the site plan that is not yet complete, from a technical standpoint, and is under engineering review by the town. This process of review for completeness of site plans is routine and often takes a few weeks, especially for complex projects such as this,” said Carlson.

Last week, Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca and other township officials, along with developer Joe Forgione and architect David Minno of JMF, met privately with famed architect Richard Meier, who had offered a one-hour consult on the project’s design.

The Village Green reached out to Meier after the meeting, but a representative said Meier was unable to comment further.
