From the Lydia Johnson Dance School:

The acclaimed Lydia Johnson Dance (LJD) School, a nonprofit organization, will begin its winter/spring session next week, and there is still time to register for classes for preschoolers through adults at two locations – Maplewood’s Burgdorff Center for the Performing Arts and South Orange’s St. Andrew’s Church. Classes are taught by professional dancers from the LJD company, and the focus is on building confidence and embracing creativity, while remaining non-competitive and joy-filled.

The LJD School’s winter/spring semester will culminate in heartwarming Evening Showings of Student Choreography on the gorgeous Woodland stage in Maplewood, where students in grades 1 and above will perform their own dances and class excerpts. Younger dancers show their joyful and expressive dancing in Open Classes for Parent Observation.

The LJD School is unique in its link to the professional company and in offering the study of dance composition in every class. The creative approach that the School fosters allows students to expand and thrive, all while learning dance technique in styles such as ballet and contemporary/modern. The School is known for its warm atmosphere, a place where students can make new friends to dance with and where families who appreciate a fine arts approach can connect with one another. The dance educators are patient and caring, and will celebrate your child’s progress alongside you.

The Student Company allows invited dancers 6th grade and up to choreograph and perform. The Student Company has previously performed with the professional company during its season in NYC and in Maplewood Village as part of the vibrant Summer Streets program. This spring, Student Company dancers will perform their own choreography at the gorgeous Alvin Ailey studios in NYC.

LJD School classes are held at two convenient locations – Maplewood Village and zero-stress parking in South Orange Village. Any interested families are always invited to discuss curriculum and to find the right class for their dancer directly with Lydia Johnson, at lydia@lydiajohnsondance.org
