New Jersey Transit has resumed train service in both directions on the Morris & Essex line early Sunday morning after suspending train traffic late Saturday night between East Orange and Maplewood “due to a trespasser fatality near Maplewood.”

Local residents reported heavy police and fire department personnel presence in Maplewood Village shortly after 10 p.m. By 10:20 p.m., NJ Transit had posted on its website that rail service was suspended in both directions.

A New Jersey Transit spokesperson told NJ.com that the victim is female. “Train No. 6940 was heading to Penn Station in New York when it hit the woman around 10 p.m.,” reported NJ.com. The spokeswoman added that none of the train’s 175 passengers nor any crew members were injured.
