Charlie Bibbins passed away on August 20, 2014. His life will be celebrated on September 20.

Friends and family will celebrate the life of Charles H. (“Charlie”) Bibbins, of Maplewood, at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 20 at  Morrow Memorial Church in Maplewood.

Bibbins passed away from brain cancer on August 20.

Bibbins leaves behind his beloved wife of 55 years, Emily Highfield Bibbins, a daughter Alison Burris and her husband Charles, and a son Thomas Bibbins and his wife Patricia. He was also the loving grandfather of Taylor, Logan and Hunter Bibbins, and Daltrey and Rheannon Burris. He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Buchanan, and his grandson, Skyler Burris.

Born in Orange, New Jersey on Sep. 2, 1932, Bibbins grew up in Short Hills, attended Millburn High School and graduated from Cornell University with a BS and MBA in 1955. He retired from Elizabeth Arden in 1994, following 30 years of service as Director of Sales Administration.

But Bibbins was best known for his public service.

For 50 years, Bibbins participated in many civic organizations in Maplewood and South Orange. Marking his dedication, he received the Maple Leaf Award (1973) and the Distinguished Service Award from The Township of Maplewood (1980), and was recognized by the Community Coalition on Race (2012).

Bibbins founded a Jaycee chapter in Maplewood which led to his being invited to join the Maplewood Civic Association. He was very active for more than 30 years on the Civic Association where he eventually served as president and started the Welcome to Maplewood program.

Bibbins was also a long-time member and one-time chair of the Maplewood Citizens Budget Advisory Committee; served on and chaired the Maplewood Juvenile Conference Committee; was a charter member and for many years chair of the Maplewood Transportation Advisory Committee; chaired a year-long study of the sharply declining school population and the financial need to close some schools; and has served on many ad hoc committees studying such issues as garbage removal options, how to deal with anticipated increased parking needs with the introduction of the Midtown Direct line, and what to do with the old police station property.

Bibbins was also a long time Trustee and past president of the South Orange-Maplewood Adult School.

As resident at Winchester Gardens, he continued to offer his wisdom and support on a number of initiatives.

As news of Bibbins death spread in the last two weeks, tributes sprung up. The Community Coalition on Race published a remembrance on its website.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Mr. Bibbins’ Life at Morrow Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, on Saturday, Sept. 20th at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted for the South Orange-Maplewood Adult School, 17 Parker Avenue, Maplewood, NJ 07040.
