The deadline to declare candidacy for the South Orange – Maplewood School District Board of Education is 4 p.m. on July 31. There are three seats open this year, with the following member’s terms coming to an end: Elizabeth Baker, Maureen Jones and Donna Smith. The terms are for three years. The general election is Nov. 7, 2017.
Baker and Smith have told Village Green they both plan to run again. Jones said she is still considering it and will announce her decision later this month.
As of Thursday, the Essex County Clerk’s office confirmed that the only person to pick up a petition packet and officially enter the race is John Sarantakis, who announced his candidacy on Facebook last week.
(At least ten signatures, one of which must be the candidate’s, are required to nominate a candidate.)
The Village Green will follow up on this story.
