Four local artists, working collaboratively as The Art Generators (TAG), are opening a new pop-up gallery fittingly called The Art Generators Gallery (TAGG), with a grand opening celebration on Friday, September 4, at 14 Newark Way in Maplewood.
The gallery is presented in collaboration with Artie’s restaurant, which made the space available for the project. The inaugural celebration is themed “It’s Electric”, and will introduce “a new creative destination committed to showcasing artists both local and from afar, while fostering community, and bringing fresh energy to this growing section of Maplewood,” according to a press release from TAG.
The Art Generators
Founded less than two years ago, TAG includes artists Natalie Crandall, Sumana Ghosh-Witherspoon, Ken Stanek, and Magie McGowan. The group has quickly become a driving force in the SOMA arts community, with its wildly popular Affordable Art events. Two more are scheduled in South Orange in September and November.
The new gallery on Newark Way will continue to build on that momentum by providing space for workshops, artist talks, and community events, and monthly “First Friday” art openings.

The gallery plans to operate Thursdays through Sundays, 4:30-8:30 p.m.
“Our art markets have proven that people are looking for community and connection. This gallery lets us keep that conversation going,” said The Art Generators via press release. “Creativity brings people together, and we’re looking forward to creating a space where everyone feels welcome.”
TAGG is the latest in a number of businesses to open in the Newark Way/Boyden Avenue area. Other businesses include Artie’s, Pasta Rossa, Pallet Brewery, Corner Slice, Shopkeeper,

Wheelhouse and Perla Seafood & Raw Bar. Many of the businesses rent from Artie’s owner Fred Shandler, who has worked to recruit other local entrepreneurs to the area. Pallet Brewing rents from Levent Erhamza, the owner of Guten Parts + Storage.
