Leading this week’s news, the South Orange Board of Trustees approved a resolution to offer residents ‘Peak Democracy’ software to “better engage residents and stakeholders in South Orange.” The software and services will cost slightly less than $5,000 per year for two years (pro-rated at $2.084 for 2014) with an option to extend for another two years at the same price. While the Public Information and Marketing Committee still needs to work out practices and procedures, the idea is that the township will be able to post information and questions or surveys on the new township website and residents will be able to respond. The software will assure that people use their real names and also will guard against “thread drift” and inappropriate content.
South Orange Trustee Walter Clarke also released information on the township’s street trees — which number 10,500.
In business news, Carolyn Maynard-Parisi reported details about the imminent opening of The Dancing Blender on South Orange Avenue. Elizabeth Alterman got the scoop on All Curled Up, a new salon in Short Hills for kids with textured hair.
We started previewing autumn with fall registration information for the Baird and for South Mountain YMCA programs, as well as listing events for the local fall theater season, and talking up Play and Stay Weekend in South Orange on September 20 and 21. Finally, Maplewood Girls Lacrosse is holding fall Friday Night Clinics.
But it’s still summer and there are another two weeks for Ultimate Frisbee Camp in Maplewood. An obstacle course at Maplewood Pool was widely popular and may return again this summer.Meanwhile Sunday, August 17 brought “Adult Night” to the South Orange Pool.

In school news, we reminded parents and families that there is a math packet due for middle schoolers and high schoolers. Plus, we profiled new Jefferson School Principal Kimberly Hutchinson. And we shared the district’s detailed plan to meet with various specialized groups to obtain feedback on the superintendent search. We reminded parents that there is an orientation tour and BBQ for incoming 6th graders on August 21 at South Orange Middle School and we provided the SOMS schools supply lists.
On the collegiate level, Seton Hall University was recently named one of “The Best 379 Colleges” by The Princeton Review for the 18th consecutive year.
Maplewood police reported that a man stole a fanny pack from a woman on Springfield Avenue, Millburn police arrested a cab driver who threatened a valet at the Short Hills Hilton, and South Orange police arrested a man for threatening another with a large industrial nail.
