After a successful run last winter, South Orange’s impromptu ice rink will return again for Winter 2017 — as soon as temperatures drop below freezing.
The South Orange Recreation Department reports that the temporary ice rink is all set on the tennis courts at The Baird at 5 Mead Street.
“Now we just need the weather to cooperate,” read an update from the Recreation Department.
“The rink will be open to South Orange residents with a current Recreation Department Membership I.D. and their guests. The guest fee is $5 per person per day. The rink will be open for the winter season, weather and ice permitting, Monday–Friday 3:30 to 9:00 p.m., Saturdays 12:00-9:00 p.m. and Sundays 12:00-6:00 p.m.”
Maplewood residents can attend as long as they are accompanied by a current badge holder from South Orange.
Skaters must bring their own skates.
The rink is an effort spearheaded by South Orange Village Trustee Steve Schnall. To create the amenity, a vinyl rink is placed on top of the courts and filled with 4-6 inches of water. The weather takes care of the rest.
