Journalist Lisa Belkin brings her trademark blend of candor and riveting storytelling to [words] bookstore in Maplewood on Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 pm. Best known today for writing about work-family balance, Belkin will be discussing the book Show Me a Hero which details the a white middle class neighborhood’s resistance to a federally mandated scattered-sight public housing development in Yonkers, NY and how these tensions affected the city as a whole.
These decades-old events feel particularly timely now in light of this summer’s Supreme Court ruling that even unintentional housing discrimination is illegal.
Show Me a Hero was recently turned into a miniseries, which aired on HBO this past summer.
Belkin is the author of three books and the editor of two anthologies, as well as the host of Life’s Work with Lisa Belkin on XM Radio. In addition to being a regular contributor to Public Radio’s The Takeaway and NBC’s Today Show, Belkin is the Senior National Correspondent for Yahoo News, covering American social issues. She spent nearly 30 years at The New York Times.
Admission to this event is free, no advance registration required or book purchase necessary to attend. Event host [words] bookstore is located in Maplewood, NJ and is a growing community hub for readers of all ages.
