“This is the time to do this,” said Maplewood Township Committeeperson Dean Dafis. The TC is aiming for a November 2025 local ballot referendum while putting pressure on state legislators to pass an RCV bill.

Bimal Kapadia, Deirdre Brown and Jeff Bennett are three of the seven candidates running for seats on the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education. Election day is November 5.

Today, incumbents Dr. Qawi Telesford and Arun Vadlamani filed to run along with Bethany Joseph, who will join their slate, and Paul Stephan, who announced his independent candidacy on July 17. Jeff Bennett, Bimal Kapadia and Deirdre Brown announced their slate and filed on Friday.

The three candidates will be running together on a slate, per the Essex County Clerk’s Office. Election day is November 5.

The committee thanked President Joe Biden for his leadership and said it was “time to come together to defeat Trump.”

In addition to having been a teacher, Stephan has worked at the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights, and he worked on education issues at the Government Accountability Office.

“We still won,” said Morgan Triska. “We still won because we still have you as a town leader who will continue to advocate for people who aren’t seen equally.”

Deputy Mayor Jamaine Cripe, who ran on a ticket with Adams, will not be on the ballot in November.
