From SOMA [South Orange-Maplewood] Action:
Tis the season…for satirical political holiday songs! SOMA Action’s Financial Conflicts of Interest and Anti-Corruption Committee (big name for a BIG problem) is reprising its “Holiday Caroling with a Political Purpose.” They will be singing holiday tunes with “breaking news” lyrics in and around SOMA town centers during the week of December 15 – 22.
The Carolers hope to spread a little cheer and have some fun in these uncertain times. They also hope their songs will focus public attention on the ongoing corruption in the Trump administration. But this holiday season the carolers also are in a celebratory mood. The past two years of sustained activism around the nation has led to nothing less than a revitalization of American democracy. Nowhere were the effects of this mobilization more evident than in suburban New Jersey, where on election day voters ousted 4 of 5 Republican House members. Indeed, 2018 was an historic election by almost any measure, with the largest turnout for a midterm since before World War One. This is something to cheer about! As one of the carols notes: “We Had Ourselves a Very Good Election…”
Valyrie Laedlein, SOMA Action member and creator of the Resistance Caroler Stocking Stuffer Lyric Booklet (available upon request for a small donation!) says: “The songs celebrate recent House victories, while allowing us to laugh at (and scorn) the absurdities of this Administration.”
While the mood is upbeat, the carolers also wish to remind people that there is still much to do, and we need all hands on deck. To the tune of “Let it Snow”:
We know we need to keep on going.
We have no intention of slowing.
The midterms were just our debut.
We’re not through, we’re not through, we’re not through.
Or, try this one:
Deck the halls with lots of Democrats
Constituents will not be doormats
Now we all can push for new things.
Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la.
Can’t wait to see what next year brings.
So sing with a purpose this holiday season and join us for one, two, or all three of our performances!
