South Orange Middle School is hosting a Flea Market on Sunday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the SOMS parking lot, to help raise money for the 8th Grade trip to Washington, DC.

As of right now, there are 30 vendors, three food trucks, donations from Sparkhouse and maybe a Jazz Band!

If you have items that you can donate, the 8th graders will have a table to sell them. Items can be dropped from 6 am to 9am on Sunday.

The SOMS Flea is the brainchild of mom Elizabeth Payne, who thought a flea market would be a great way to raise money — as well as reduce lines at the Township’s bulk dropoff events at Public Works and recycle items instead of having them go into a landfill.

“For the years that I’ve lived here, waiting in the line to get down into the DPW yard has lasted three hours, resulting in a huge traffic jam on Walton, the need for police, etc. only to get down into the yard and see all this amazing stuff that people were throwing out. It always seemed to me that there should be some venue for people to donate stuff (trash) that could be transformed into someone else’s stuff (treasure),” wrote Payne in an email.

“At the end of the day, whatever has been donated but doesn’t sell, we’ll load into the dumpster (which is where it would’ve gone anyway!). I’m hoping that we won’t have much of anything left, and that we’ll make a few dollars.”

Rent a parking space in the SOMS lot for $40 and sell whatever you want.  Donation dropoff and vendor setup takes place April 24 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. The Flea Market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This event is ideal for crafters, upcyclers, getting a few bucks for the trash you were going to haul to container day, or having a yard sale with the camaraderie of neighbors — the ideas are endless.  To volunteer or rent a space, email SOMSFleaMarket@gmail.com. Click HERE for more information.
