“Historic preservation is a hot topic, but so are parks/fields/open spaces, stormwater resiliency, housing affordability — the number one issue I get emails about most frequently — economic development. These are likely our implementation priorities.”

The plan addresses zoning and development that is sensitive to the scale of residential neighborhoods, preserving historic structures, stronger protection against demolitions, providing affordable housing and preparing the town for the future regarding climate change.

The Planning Board discussed the potential rezoning of Pierson’s Mill, affordable housing, and tightening regulations on demolition. “…there’s so many regulations in Madison, in Chatham, in Short Hills, in Summit, in Morristown, Westfield, etc. that now the developers are moving here. And that’s not a good pattern,” said local architect Thomas Conway.

The plan’s vision is for all Maplewoodians to have access to affordable homes, resilient neighborhoods, excellent facilities and services, a strong local economy, historical and cultural resources and more.

Town officials say the time to comment will be at a Township Committee meeting on Sept. 6. Neighbors say they wanted to be included sooner.
