Maplewood Film Society Co-Founder Lisa Cohen at redevelopment plan community meeting: “[The plan] really does leave the future of our beloved theater entirely in the hands of a developer.”

One resident asked, “If I said, ‘I’m gonna buy the movie theater tomorrow,’ I can do whatever I want, right? Within the current guidelines, I’m trying to understand what exactly we’re doing.” The consultant said the redevelopment plan would change the regulations that apply to the properties, giving the town flexibility when it comes to making the specific changes they want for the location.

The TC recently designated six of the eight lots within the area — which face Maplewood Ave. and are between Inwood Pl. and Durand Rd — as an area in need of redevelopment.

Brandon Collier, a local resident currently developing 7 West Parker, a 46-unit apartment building at the site of the former Gleason’s Cleaners, is in “…very early in discussions over the concept for the redevelopment” with the property owner.

Acting as the Alcoholic Beverage Control board, Maplewood officials declined to award a liquor license to an entity representing the Maplewood Theater. During testimony from the applicant, it became apparent that a plan with Cinema Lab to reopen the building as a restaurant and cinema had fallen through.
