Maplecrest Skate Park Groundbreaking

Groundbreaking for new, bigger skate park at Maplecrest Park on May 16, 2015.

On Saturday, May 16, the Township of Maplewood officially broke ground on a new skate park in Maplecrest Park. Members of the Township Committee were in attendance along with members of the Skate Park Committee, the Recreation Advisory Committee, and the Open Space Trust Fund.

However, according to a notification from the Township, actual construction will begin on or about June 22.

Maplewood Recreation and Cultural Affairs Director Keith Knudsen said that the skate park will double in size, and be made of concrete.  This park is estimated to reopen August 7.

The $135,000 cost of the construction will be paid for through the Township’s Open Space Trust Fund.

The News-Record noted that the improvements will double the size of the park to accommodate the many skateboarders who use it; that concrete will replace wooden ramps and asphalt for better skateboarding and muffled sound; and that a group of about 20 skateboarders were included in the redesign of the park. In addition, the Township has announced that the swing set at DeHart Park is currently closed for safety reasons.  On or about June 8, the DeHart Playground will be under construction.  The entire playground will be replaced with new equipment including a new swing set.  The park is estimated to reopen the second week of July.
