Since The Village Green launched this summer, it has quickly become a trusted source of journalistic coverage on the issues that matter to Maplewood, South Orange and environs.

In just a few months of operation, our readership has grown rapidly. In October alone, The Village Green logged an incredible 38,598 sessions, 23,540 unique users, and 60,516 page views – a large number for a hyperlocal news site, especially a new one.

We think we know why. As former Patch editors – and locals ourselves — we know what you want to read: news about schools, government, elections, crime and public safety, business, the arts, lifestyle, real estate, food, sports, events and more.

We know you believe in local news, and we know you want it to continue. Help support our efforts by subscribing to our daily newsletter:

Some journalistic highlights thus far include detailed and thoughtful coverage of the CHS teacher arrest, breaking the story of a Maplewood elected official’s view on marriage equality, reporting minute-by-minute live accounts of the high school lockdown, providing real-time election results and candidate coverage, and covering ongoing redevelopment conversations about the Maplewood Post Office, Marylawn of the Oranges site, Springfield Avenue parcels including Advance Auto, Irvington Avenue, South Orange Village Hall and more, much more.

We are grateful to our readers for supporting us, and we want to build on our success by expanding our coverage to deliver more news, and to dig deeper into issues that matter in our towns.

Community journalism can only exist if the community supports it. The Village Green is completely free to read, and we depend on advertising revenue to keep us going.

But if you value well-reported news stories that hit you where you live and you want to support local community news, you can subscribe to our daily newsletter for just $36 a year –that’s only $3 a month, less than the price of one perfectly pulled latte at The Able Baker or a delicious Sconewich from Cedar Ridge Cafe.

Not ready to commit to a full year? How about trying three months for $12, or go for the $5 per month option?

If you already subscribe, thank you! — and please send this link to your local friends who likewise value local news coverage.

Email newsletters are actually growing in popularity, because as The New York Times media columnist David Carr wrote, “…having something finite and recognizable show up in your inbox can impose order on all that chaos.”

We want to help YOU impose order on the chaos, by delivering to your inbox a roundup of every article we’ve posted in the last 24 hours, plus listings of events from our calendar – seven days a week.

Sign up now to support local, community journalism and to keep on top of what’s going on in Maplewood and South Orange.
