Reader, I Weighed In

Thursday saw the second Weigh-In for the South Orange Health & Fitness Challenge. One month into the challenge, the other participants and I arrived at the Baird Center, where Kate Schmidt recorded the number on the scale.

Winners for first month, which ended February 19, were named. The two women who lost most are Elissa Malespina, who lost 8.1 percent of her weight, closely followed by Sheena Collum, who lost 7.3 percent. Steve Hickson, 5.7 percent, and Pete Travers, 5.4% won in the male category. The team faring best is “Bros and Brahs,” which includes Elissa and Joe Malespina, Steve Hickson, Tracey Randinelli, and John Shabe. Well done!

The first month’s prize has been donated by Lisa Ebert, Nutritional Coach and includes: one-week supply of two daily meal replacements, an Isablender and attachments, and coaching and consultation – a value of $250!

I dithered about going to the Weigh-In. I didn’t expect great news, and I didn’t want bad. My fitness efforts are serious, but the diet side of this challenge has been difficult. I could blame peanut butter or Valentine’s Day, but I just, simply ate a great deal of food this past month.

Participants have been generous with recipes and food ideas, sharing meal photos on our #SOFit15 Facebook page. Our group dinner was grilled salmon and veggies. The problem is that I feel hungry at non-meal times, so I eat. Then mealtimes arrive, and I eat again.

For the coming month, I’ll try to eat differently. At the same time, I will continue to exercise loyally. And I will hope for better weather, so we can all get out and run around.

So what happened at the Weigh-In? When I first stood on the scale, it showed a loss of one pound. After I gave the scale the evil eye, it dropped another two ounces. Total loss? Eighteen ounces, just a bit heavier than your average bag of chocolate chips. Congratulations to the winners. I hope to join you soon on the leaderboard.
