After six months of intense playground fundraising, leaders of the Jefferson Playground Project at Jefferson School in Maplewood are thrilled to report that the effort has raised close to $79,000, with another $10,000+ from matching funds and private parties pending.

Remarkably, more than $12,000 of that amount was raised by children in the classroom at Jefferson and Marshall School (Marshall students, grades K-2, come to Jefferson for grades 3-5) with the Pennies to Play campaign. Twenty-seven classrooms between Marshall and Jefferson filled change jars and earned an ice cream party as a reward.

The final goal is $100,000 to purchase new playground equipment for Jefferson School.

According to Jefferson Playground Project team member Jen Klepesch, this progress is “testament to the commitment and dedication of this Marshall-Jefferson community.”

Now, project leaders are pushing to wrap up total fundraising efforts by Friday, May 29. In order to get it done, the project has created a final campaign called “Are we there yet?!” (see the video above).

All students will be encouraged to “Wear Red for the Playground” on Friday to celebrate the successful fundraising effort.
