From Columbia High School Robotics Team Supervisor and CHS science teacher Allan Tumolillo:
CHS Robotics Team did very well and made it to the Semifinals in the State Tournament [on February 28, 2016]. The varsity team had a very good year, learned a great deal about robotics, software, building and failing and trying again. All of the team members return next year — no seniors in the group — and they will be a force to contend with in the robotics league. With a year under their belt and their very strong talent, I think CHS Robotics will do very well. And they have strong teams coming up behind them.
Next year my hope is four teams, one for freshmen, one for sophomores, one for juniors and one for seniors. If that pans out we will have one of the largest clubs in New Jersey and it will also be pretty strong.
Sometime in May, date to be determined, we will have a “Tech Night: at CHS highlighting Robotics, Girls Who Code, Programming Club, the Flight Club (drones), the CyberPatriots club (cyber security) and our Science Research classes with kids working on NASA databases, Synthetic Biology, and a variety of very interesting projects. While the evening will be aimed at Middle Schoolers to give them a preview of the tech side of the world at CHS, certainly others will be welcome.
We all should know that the Robotics Club has help spur these developments and the more we help support these innovative and creative clubs, the more it will creep into the curriculum.
