Morrow Church Turnover Sale welcomes first donations
Morrow Church welcomed the first Turnover Sale donations this weekend, as two local residents dropped off housewares and books for the July rummage sale. “We’re excited to give and to buy,” said the locals, who chose not to be identified. Another donor, Carla Stein, laughed that she was “getting rid of stuff to make space for new.” Stein’s donations included baby equipment and a rug.
The Maplewood sale, which begins on July 1, is an 81-year-old tradition in the community. Run by volunteers for the benefit of local organizations, the sale has seven dates and welcomes some 1,000 customers through the doors of the church and tent.
The sale sponsored by the United Methodist Women at Morrow Church. This year the sale was described in New Jersey Monthly, one of a handful of sales around the state so designated, as a place to go for “savvy shoppers.” Two floors of the church and an outside tent are filled with merchandise that is priced to sell quickly. Jewelry, furniture and clothes for the entire family draw shoppers from across the state and from Manhattan.
Morrow Church Turnover Sale features a variety of items
The sale relies on a team of volunteers, and all proceeds benefit local organizations. In past year, the Turnover Sale has purchased defibrillators and supplies for a shelter. Even donated goods that don’t sell are passed along to a cadre of agencies. Unsold items are donated to Goodwill Industries, The Methodist Home in Ocean Grove, the Burn Center in Newark, American Rescue Workers, CUMAC, PCCI, Habitat, Essex County Family Violence and more.
The sale accepts donations during business hours until July 12, for those who need a receipt. Locals can also donate by dropping off items at the Baker Street door at anytime.
