Halloween is just a few weeks away. Always a huge event in Maplewood and South Orange, this year is no different. Because Halloween is on a Saturday this year, Maplewood’s festivities are on the Friday (the day before), while South Orange’s are on Saturday.

This means you can have two Halloween celebrations in one weekend! Here’s what you need to know:

Maplewood

Because Halloween is on a Saturday this year, the renowned Halloween Parade and Costume Contest will be held Friday, Oct. 30 from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. on Maplewood Avenue between Durand and Baker.

The street is closed from 2:45 pm to 5:30 pm from Baker to Durand. There is no parking on Maplewood Avenue after 1 pm on the day of the event, which is sponsored by the Maplewood Village Alliance and the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce.

What to expect? During the parade, local merchants hand out candy and other treats, plus there is music and dancing and prizes for best costumes. A fun time is guaranteed at this beloved annual event. (Note: if you have very little ones, it’s best to get there on the early side, as the event can get quite crowded.)

South Orange

The 2015 Halloween Festival will once again take place in Spiotta Park on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 4-6 p.m. As in previous years, every child in costume will get a prize, and there will be grand prizes awarded in several different categories. Look for the return of Wanda the Giant Witch as well. The festivities are sponsored by Sparkhouse, Y Gallery Salon, D&I Fitness and Music for Aardvarks.
