High school students and recent grads who are interested in putting their educations to productive use might want to meet Lisa Mark.

Mark, a career counselor, works to help students pinpoint their interests and career path. “The college dropout rate is up to 59% for public universities and its 47% for private colleges. The underemployment rate for college grads is 27%. If high school and college students can find a direction that interests them, it would make a big difference,” said Mark, who worries that without proper guidance and direction local high school grads will never start college, or will drop out, not graduate college or be unable to find professional jobs.

To help avoid such a situation, Mark is running a free hands-on workshop titled “What Do I Want to Do When I Grow Up?” on April 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hilton Branch of the Maplewood Library for high school students and high school graduates. Attendees will learn more about themselves and get some ideas about what occupations, careers, or college majors will fit their interests and their career personality. Mark writes that the workshop is a “fun and revealing activity in which you can develop greater self-awareness and learn about jobs and work environments that they may be a good fit for you and help lead you to a rewarding career in the future.”

The workshop is adapted from an exercise created by Richard Bolles which is based on Dr. John Holland’s theory that people and work environments can be loosely classified into six different groups.
