A Maplewood Middle School student was taken into police custody this afternoon for handgun possession at the school, according to MPD Captain Dawn Williams.
In a release, Williams reported that Maplewood police responded to a report of a student with a weapon at the school at 12:03 p.m. The school was placed in code red lockdown status and “appropriate measures” were taken to ensure the safety of all students.
The South Orange Police Department and Essex County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search of the school and apprehension of the student.
The incident is still under investigation.
