Olympic Bronze Medalist and Maplewood native Ibtihaj Muhammad surprised the Columbia High School fencing team with an impromptu visit during the team’s practice at the New Jersey Fencing Alliance in Maplewood on Thursday.
“She told us her story of becoming an Olympic fencer and gave us encouragement to persist at what we were doing,” said one fencer. “It was inspirational to have her come back and tell us how great our team can be.”
Muhammad, who began fencing at NJFA at age 12 and was a CHS team member and coach, posed for photos and selfies and showed her 2016 Team USA Bronze medal.
