No school for students in the South Orange – Maplewood School District on Monday, following a winter blizzard that dumped around two feet of snow on the area, creating hazardous driving conditions.
The robo-call and emails came at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday night. Scores of other districts in Essex, Union and surrounding counties also will be closed or have delayed openings.
A district spokeswoman explained that the decision to close stemmed from a combination of dangerous driving conditions as well as difficulties clearing snow from all school parking lots and driveways in time.
“Although the district and towns had staff working on snow removal throughout the weekend, the magnitude of the snow has caused icy conditions on the roads and sidewalks in both towns,” said the spokeswoman. “We therefore decided to cancel school for the day in the interest of safety for our students and staff.”
