Soccerhood, an organization led by local parents and staff from the South Orange – Maplewood School District, will host its second annual Car Wash benefit on Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Mountain YMCA Parking Lot (10 West Parker in Maplewood, across from Gleason’s Cleaners).
The organization, co-founded by Katie Simpson, Kate Fearon, Jennifer Latimer, and Elizabeth Sarkisian, offers children of local immigrant families the opportunity to play soccer.
Soccerhood identifies children with an interest in playing soccer, helps them get enrolled, finds them assistance with transportation when needed, and raises money to cover the cost of equipment and registration in full.
The organization is supported by the South Mountain Y’s Togetherhood program, which aims to increase community volunteerism through member-led projects that benefit the community. Soccerhood is also supported by Kicks & Sticks in Millburn, which provides new equipment at a generously discounted rate, and also by the Baird Center, which finds teams for the players.
The car wash is Soccerhood’s main annual fundraiser. Last year, the carwash raised over $700. This season the organization is supporting nine players, and their goal is to raise at least $2,025 by May 15.
